Andy House, CEO and President of Sony Computer Games Entertainment said this week that the company is aiming to recognize the expectation of a lower price point for downloadable versions of retail games.

“We have fantastic relationships with retail partners who have a large stake in the success of PlayStation Vita and we want that to continue, but we recognize the need to have a lower price point for digital games taking into account that you don’t have packaging costs and other extra considerations associated with physical copies,” House said.

Digital versions of retail games typically sell at the same price as physical games at online divisions, including the Playstation Network.

Sony this week will launch the Playstation Vita to U.S. retail in Wi-Fi and 3G SKUs starting at $249.99.

In addition to games, the hardware will include non-gaming applications like Twitter, Facebook, and FourSquare.
