LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean includes levels based on all four pirates films – The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man’s Chest, At World’s End, and On Stranger Tides.

Following a short introduction level, users are welcomed to The Port where levels from each of the four Pirates films can be selected. Additionally, users can purchase new characters in The Port for more than 70 characters to collect, including the Guard Dog.

Like prior LEGO entries, Pirates of the Caribbean includes attack, jump, character switch, and contextual buttons. New to the combat are nimble attacks that will automatically convert into sword fighting, complete with parrying and finishers that break enemies in half.

The LEGO version may be the most challenging in terms of puzzles. Rather than simply building a broken set of LEGOs to secure the next required item, Pirates requires users to explore and break the entire area to find and connect multiple puzzles to complete the area.

Each character holds a unique trait that must be utilized to complete levels. For example, Capt. Jack Sparrow can search for treasure, Mr. Gibbs can weld machinery, and Anamaria can double jump.

Two-player local co-op is back and users can jump in and out at any time. The split-screen action is constantly divided by a real-time ratio depending on the distance between the two players. At times, the constant split-screen shift can be dizzying, though it provides each user with a close-up view of the action.

The graphics engine is good at 30 frames per second. The LEGO Pirates land is well-textured and utilizes a comical reinterpretation of the franchise well. The sound engine employs the movie soundtrack for an orchestral feel throughout.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean is a solid quest in the Pirates film franchise. The re-interpretation is complete with a loving admiration to the film source, complete with swift sword combat and pirate puzzles for all ages.
