PS3 Firmware 3.61 overheating old hardware, says publisher

Publisher Rockstar Games this week said Sony Corp.’s new Firmware 3.61 System Update for the Playstation 3 is overheating units playing the company’s new action title L.A. Noire.

In a company support forum statement, the publisher said it has received reports of PS3 60GB and PS3 80GB SKUs shutting down during play of L.A. Noire.

It adds that it can confirm that PS3 units installed with Firmware 3.61 froze or shut down during play of Rockstar and non-Rockstar game titles.

The new Firmware 3.61 is a mandatory update that requires PSN users to change their password prior to login of the network following an external intrusion that cripped the online network.

Sony expects to have service fully restored by the end of May.

Sony in Feb. began sale of the Playstation 3 160GB Killzone 3 Bundle at $299.99.

The PS3 is sold in a 160GB SKU at $299.99 and a 320GB SKU at $349.99.

Playstation Move Console Bundle includes the PS3 320GB SKU, Playstation Move Controller, Playstation Eye, and Sports Champions at $399.99.
