Week recap: PS3 No. 6; Xbox 360 Holiday; Wii Music

Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 ranked as the No. 6 game hardware in the latest Japan sales. It ranked last overall among all video game hardware.

Advanced sales for MotorStorm: Pacific Rift for the PS3 revved up this week at retail. The product will be released on Oct. 28.

PS3 owners this week snapped up LittleBigPlanet beta codes from USA Today in a free giveaway promotion. The beta codes allow owners to test drive the title prior to release.

Sony this week began selling premium PS3 XMB themes at the Playstation Store. The company plans to offer six to ten premium themes per month.

Konami Digital Entertainment Inc. this week said it will release a Metal Gear Online expansion called MEME Expansion. It will include new maps, special characters, and new skills.

GameStop Corp. this week began offering a new LittleBigPlanet pre-order promotion. Customers to pre-purchase the title will receive new characters and a God of War level pack.

Sony this week said Iron Man was the top movie download on the Playstation Network. Other top films included The Love Guru and Sex and the City.

Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 beat the PS3 for the forth straight week in the latest Japan weekly sales. The Xbox 360 ranked No. 5 in overall sales.

Microsoft this week released new Xbox 360 Holiday Bundles to retail. The new SKUs included bonus games to provided added value to consumers.

Microsoft this week said it will raise its Xbox 360 sales forecast in Japan. Sales have increased since a hardware price cut went in effect on Sept. 1.

Advanced sales for The Last Remnant increased this week at Amazon.com. The RPG title will be sold this Nov.

Best Buy Co. Inc. stores this week began offering a free Remote Control Tank with the pre-purchase of Gears of War 2. The title will be sold in Nov.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii held strong in the latest Japan sales. The Wii ranked No. 3 in overall hardware sales.

Amazon this week price cut Mario Wii titles in a new video game discount. Super Smash Bros. Brawl was price cut to $34.99 and Super Mario Strikers was discounted to $38.99.

Advanced sales for Wii Music this week increased at retail. The title will be sold in Oct.

Nintendo this week released a new wave of WiiWare and Virtual Console titles to Wii. New offerings include Midnight Bowling, Mario Golf, and Shining Force II.

The Nintendo DS topped the PSP in the latest Japan retail figures. The DS ranked as the No. 1 best-selling hardware for the week.

Technology News

The Dark Knight Blu-ray disc SKU soared to No. 2 upon availability at Amazon this week. The title will be sold in Dec.

Target stores this week began selling a new stand-alone Blu-ray player at $229.99. The player offers 1080p high-definition functionality.

Amazon this week began offering 45 percent off Blu-ray disc three-pack bundles. The offer includes 12 discounted bundles.

Circuit City Stores Inc. this week began offering a new $17.99 Blu-ray sale. Titles included 300, I Am Legend, and We Are Marshall.
