Immersion to pay $20.75M to Microsoft in feedback settlement

Immersion Corp. this week it will pay Microsoft Corp. $20.75 million regarding payment received from Sony Corp. over force feedback technology.

Microsoft sued Immersion in June 2007 to receive payment under a 2003 sub-license agreement that it claimed obligated to Microsoft a minimum of $15 million for any payments from Sony up to $100 million, plus 25 percent of any amounts over $100 million up to $150 million.

Immersion denied that it should pay Microsoft, stating that it breacheda May 2007 confidentiality agreement.

The settlement includes admission of Immersion into Microsoft’s Certified Partner Program.

Sony in Nov. 2006 released the Sixaxis controller for the Playstation 3 with no rumble functionality due to ongoing litigation with Immersion Corp., a tactile feedback company.

In Mar. 2007, the companies announced an agreement to end litigation and incorporate Immersion technology in Sony products.

Titles compatible with the new rumble-enabled Dualshock 3 controller include Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots, Unreal Tournament 3, Condemned 2, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.
