Wii controller sales up amid possible ban

July 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii Classic Controller increased this week at Amazon.com following a court ruling that may ban the sale of the product from retail shelves.

The $19.99 Wii Classic Controller held a 207 percent increase in sales by Wed. evening to rank as the No. 40 best-selling product in the Video Games division.

Nintendo held an unsuccessful bid to overturn a $21 million patent-infringement ruling in favor of Anascape Ltd.

Controllers found not to infringe on a patent by Anascape include the Wii Remote controller and the Nunchuck controller.

Anascape’s patent is said to cover certain remote configurations to control six types of motions simultaneously.

Nintendo last week said Wii is the No. 1-selling console in the U.S., selling 10.9 million units to date.

Last week it showcased a new peripheral for the Wii Remote called Wii MotionPlus. The product, developed by InvenSense Inc., will be sold with the spring 2009 title Wii Sports Resort.
