Microsoft Games for Windows – Live service now free

Microsoft Corp. on Wed. said that it will now offer the Games for Windows – Live online gaming service at no cost for developers, publishers, and gamers.

The Games for Windows – Live service includes Achievements, cross-platform play with the Xbox 360, voice and text chat, and a friends list.

Last week, the company announced three new titles compatible with Games for Windows – Live, including Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, Battlestations: Pacific and Fallout 3.

Additionally, a new Live Marketplace will offer free and premium downloadable game content, trailers and demos.

Microsoft last week said that it will overhaul the Xbox Live game service with a new interface and a new Primetime division for online game shows.

In July, it price cut the 20GB Xbox 360 to $299.99. It will retail a 60GB Xbox 360 SKU this fall for $399.
