Sony Corp.’s LittleBigPlanet for the Playstation 3 held a wave of gameplay elements at the E3 Media & Business Summit that is likely to attract core and casual consumers to the product.
In a construction level demo, three players were allowed to competitively cooperate through a maze of physics-based platform puzzles.
Elements included balance beams that required one player to stand on one end in order for another to reach the next beam, and momentum-based swings from one ball to the next.
Movement required specifically timed jumps and leaps more akin to 8-bit titles than today’s easier platform games.
Each jump is tepid, where a misjudged or mistimed leap will cause the player to fail.
In addition to cooperating, each player must compete for points. In the level, whoever leaps on a mini construction robot will win the extra prize.
The constant give and take evokes constant social interaction among players and is likely to foster a love / hate relationship in each level off and online.
The graphics engine in the latest build can render lush real-life materials, including fabric, fuzz, wood, and steel. Light effects were exceptional, with every in-game object casting a shadow to relay depth to the 2D / 3D title.
The final game will include building and sharing abilities popular with casual players. Levels can be custom built and shared among other users on the Playstation Network. A developer level showcased at E3 held a constant vertical scroll that required players to keep moving towards the bottom while avoiding dangerous gas at the top and bottom o the screen.
LittleBigPlanet will be released in Oct. in the U.S.
