Nintendo to increase Wii shipments this year

July 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Nintendo Co. this week said that it intends to increase shipments of the popular Wii home video game system to the U.S. amid a constant sell-out status of the device in the nation.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Forbes.com this week the company will try to supply retail stores but can’t give a 100 percent commitment that buyers will find a Wii this holiday season.

“What I can commit myself to is that Nintendo is going to do its best to supply as many Wii hardware units as possible in order to meet demand there,” Iwata said.

The company said it is expected to produce 2.4 million Wii units this year and will send additional units to the U.S., where the product’s popularity outstrips demand from Europe and Asia.

Nintendo last week declared Wii as the No. 1-selling home console in the U.S. at 10.9 million units sold to date. By comparison, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 is behind at 10.2 million units and Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 trials at 4.7 million units.

The video game veteran will market a new title this holiday called Wii Music, a title where any player can create and share tracks.

Additionally, it will sell the Wii MotionPlus accessory for the Wii Remote with Wii Sports Resort in spring 2009.

Nintendo’s Wii Classic Controller and GameCube hardware may see a retail ban following an unsuccessful bid to overturn a $21 million patent-infringement ruling in favor of Anascape Ltd this week. The company has appealed the decision.
