Sony Corp.’s U.S. game division on Thurs. said that the Playstation 3 held sales 84 percent higher than Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 in June, according to NPD Group Inc.
The PS3 sold 405,488 hardware units in June, which includes sales of new PS3 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle SKU.
The figure represented a year-over-year growth of 311 percent, and a month-to-month growth of 94 percent.
Additionally, Konami Corp.’s Metal Gear Solid 4 held sales of 774,647 units in June.
To date the hardware has sold 4.7 million units in the U.S.
Sony this week touted a new Playstation Network video download service for the PS3 in which movie and TV content can be transferred to the PSP.
Content partners include Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., MGM, Fox, Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, and Disney.
This week it previewed new titles, including Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift at a press event in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Nintendo Co. on Thurs. said it has sold 10.9 million Wii units in the U.S. to date.
