Sony Corp. this week said that the PSP handheld is crucial in the company’s strategy of household media adoption.
“PSP is one of the keys to Sony owning the living room,” said Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony’s U.S. game division.
Sony this week touted a new Playstation Network video download service for the Playstation 3 in which movie and TV content can be transferred to the PSP.
Content partners include Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., MGM, Fox, Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, and Disney.
Sony estimates a 1-hour download time for a 2-hour standard definition movie. Also, owners can begin viewing movies 1 minute after the start of download.
Rival Microsoft also offers digital content distribution through its Xbox Live online service. However, the content must be viewed through the Xbox 360 console.
The company said that it has sold 35 million PSP devices worldwide to date.
It will retail a new $199 Ratchet and Clank Size Matters Entertainment Pack this fall.
