Microsoft Corp. on Mon. announced a new wave of products to continue to drive sales for the Xbox 360 game console.
This fall, the hardware will receive a new software update with a brand new interface. The interface will include new categories like the My Xbox channel to view games, photos, and movies, and the Primetime channel to play new game show titles.
The company will also introduce new avatars to allow each Xbox Live member to custom-create a character with thousands of clothes. Similar to Nintendo Co.’s Mii characters, Microsoft hopes the Xbox 360 avatar system’s numerous options will help it trump the competition.
Like Mii charaters, Xbox 360 avatars can be integrated in upcoming titles, including new games shows like 1 vs. 100 and Scene It? Box Office Smash.
Microsoft will partner with NBC Universal to deliver new downloadable TV and film content. MGM and Constantin Films will join the content in the Europe territory.
Additionally, Microsoft has partnered with Netflix Inc. to allow Xbox Live members to view Netflix titles from their console. Members can also host a party with Live members to share a Netflix film.
In sales, the Xbox 360 has sold 10.3 million units to date in the U.S., with $2.7 billion in software sales. The Xbox Live service now holds 12 million members worldwide, and more than 10,000 movies and TV shows are available for download.
