Week recap: PS3 firmware; Xbox 360 $299; Wii No. 3

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 fell back in Japan after a boost from Konami Corp.’s Metal Gear Solid 4. The hardware ranked No. 4 in overall sales.

PS3 80GB MGS4 bundle sales increased this week upon restock at Amazon.com. The SKU retails for $499.99.

Sony this week said that Double Fusion Inc. will deploy in-game advertising to the PS3. Double Fusion said it has received support from advertisers interested in in-game ads.

Advanced sales for Namco Bandai Inc.’s Soul Calibur IV are higher on the PS3 than Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 at Amazon. The PS3 special edition SKU held the largest share of sales.

Sony this week deployed firmware 2.41 to fix hardware malfunction reports of the prior 2.40 firmware. The latest update features in-game XMB access and a Trophies accomplishments system.

The PS3 and Metal Gear Solid 4 fell out of top 10 sales this week at Amazon. MGS4 held in top 10 sales one week ago.

Capcom Co. this week said that it will release 1942: Joint Strike to the Playstation Network. The title will also be sold on Xbox Live.

Sales for the Xbox 360 were steady in the latest Japan figures. The hardware ranked No. 6 in overall sales.

Best Buy this week advertised a $299 Xbox 360 Pro SKU in an advanced circular due out on July 13. The Xbox 360 Pro currently retails for $349.99.

Additionally, Target Corp. is advertising a $299 Xbox 360 Pro and a free $25 gift card on July 13. The ad disclaimed limited quantities of the item.

Amazon this week discounted the Xbox 360 controller prior to a planned hardware price cut. The controller typically retails for $39.99.

2K Games this week released Civilization Revolution to the Xbox 360. The title is also available for the PS3 and the Nintendo DS.

Amazon this week began pre-orders for the Rock Band 2 solo SKU. The stand-alone version will be released on Sept. 30.

Additionally, orders for the Rock Band 2 Special Edition ramped up this week upon availability at Amazon. The product will be released on Sept. 14.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii were behind Sony’s PSP and the Nintendo DS in the latest Japan tally. The Wii ranked No. 3 in overall hardware sales.

Activision Inc. this week said that it will tout ‘Wii 1st’ branded titles to market games designed specifically for Wii. Initial titles will debut this fall.

Advanced sales for Namco Bandai Inc.’s Active Life: Outdoor Challenge pumped up on Wii this week upon availability at Amazon. The fitness title will debut in Sept.

Konami Corp. this week sued Viacom Inc. for patent infringement related to Harmonix Inc. and MTV Games’ Rock Band video game. Rock Band was released to the Wii in June.

Nintendo this week released a new wave of WiiWare and Virtual Console titles to Wii. New offerings include Spogs Racing and King of the Monsters.

Technology News

Amazon this week began offering a 8-pack Blu-ray disc set for $80 with the purchase of a PS3 or a Blu-ray player. The 8-pack set typically retails for $161.95.

Pioneer Corp. this week said that it will release Blu-ray disc recorders in Japan. No plans have been made to sell the devices in the U.S.

The Batman Begins Blu-ray disc is the No. 1 overall movie title at Amazon this week. Additionally, the title ranked as the No. 1 Blu-ray disc title.
