PS3 sales fall back after MGS4 boost in Japan

July 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 fell back to typical figures following a multi-week boost from Konami Corp.’s Metal Gear Solid 4.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 14,359 units between June 30 and July 6. By comparison, the hardware sold 17,973 units the week prior.

Sales of Metal Gear Solid 4 fell to No. 9 from No. 7, moving another 18,486 units during the week.

Sega Corp.’s Initial D: Extreme Stage held a solid debut at No. 2, selling 43,491 units in the same period.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the latest entry in the top-selling stealth action franchise. The new title is said to be Snake’s final mission in an attempt to foil Liquid Snake and his army.

Sony’s U.S. game division last week pulled a PS3 software update offline following complaints of hardware malfunction. Firmware 2.40 was to include XMB in-game access and a new Google search bar function.

It redeployed an updated version of the firmware, 2.41, to owners earlier this week.
