Week recap: PS3 Firmware; Xbox 360 HD DVD; Wii No. 1

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 were steady in Japan on stable demand for Konami Inc.’s Metal Gear Solid 4. The hardware ranked No. 4 in overall sales.

Sony this week released a new wave of download content to the Playstation Store. New items include Rock Band tracks, Qore Episode 02, and new Movie and Blu-ray Trailers.

Sony this week yanked PS3 Firmware 2.40 offline due to reports of hardware malfunction. The update was to offer in-game XMB access and a new Google search function.

Sales for the PS3 80GB MGS4 bundle increased upon restock at Amazon.com this week. Upon availability the item ranked back in the top 25 sales.

Sales for Fallout 3: Survival Edition increased this week on stronger demand. The exclusive product will be released this Oct.

Sony this week touted social features for the new PS3 Firmware 2.40. New features include a Trophies system to show off accomplishments.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 increased 50 percent in Japan this week on the release of a new Gundam title. The hardware ranked No. 4 in overall sales.

K-Mart stores this week discounted the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to $5.00 to clear out inventory. The product debuted in 2006 for $199.99.

Sales for Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Xbox 360 increased this week on strong demand. The title ranked in the top 25 sales at Amazon.

Harmonix and MTV Games this week announced that Rock Band 2 will debut exclusively on the Xbox 360. The title will be released to other platforms later this year.

Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii were second to Sony’s PSP in the latest Japan charts. The Wii ranked No. 2 in overall hardware sales for the week.

Rock Band Special Edition for Wii this week charted in the top five amid a discount at Amazon.com. The SKU typically sells for $169.99.

Konami Inc. this week said that it will release Castlevania Judgement to the Wii this fall. The title will be the first fighting game in the franchise’s history.

Wii leaped back to the No. 1 sales position at Amazon this week upon restock. The product has held a sold out status at most U.S. retailers since launch.

Square Enix this week said that it will release the classic Chrono Trigger to the Nintendo DS. The title was originally released for the SNES in 1995.

Nintendo this week released a new wave of WiiWare and Virtual Console titles to Wii. New products include Magnetica Twist and Fatal Fury 2.

Technology News

The Godfather Collection on Blu-ray disc ranked as the No. 1 Blu-ray title at Amazon this week upon availability. The product will be released in Sept.

Best Buy Co. Inc. stores this week offered a free $100 gift card with the purchase of any Blu-ray disc player online. The offer excluded the Playstation 3.
