Sony Corp.’s U.S. game division on Mon. said that the next Playstation 3 firmware update, 2.40, will include new social features and a new accomplishments system.
In software update 2.40, users will be able to access the XMB menu in-game to connect to friends and utilize other features during a game session.
Additionally, the update will include a Trophies system to show off accomplishments and compare skills with other members.
Titles offering Trophy support include BUZZ! Quiz TV, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, NBA 09, PAIN, PixelJunk Eden, Resistance 2, SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, and Warhawk.
Finally, the update will include Google Internet search in the XMB. The feature was recently added to the PSP handheld.
“Today’s Playstation 3 experience has evolved significantly from what we debuted at launch, and the 2.40 firmware update will drive the PS3 community experience forward at a time when the platform’s momentum is stronger than ever, with the launches of several recent blockbuster titles and other exclusive content on the way,” said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing and Playstation Network, SCEA.
The Playstation Network community currently yields 9.8 million members.
Microsoft Corp.’s existing Xbox 360 interface offers in-game menu access and an Achievements rewards system connected to each player profile.
Sony this month said that it will offer a ‘Life with Playstation’ service with news and weather information at a to-be-determined date.
The PS3 ranked as the No. 3 best-selling console in May U.S. sales according to NPD Group Inc.
