June 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 fell 73 percent in Japan one week after the debut of Konami Inc.’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 20,336 units between June 16 and June 22 to rank as the No. 4 hardware for the week.

By comparison, the PS3 sold 75,311 one week prior, ranking at No. 1.

Metal Gear Solid 4 fell to No. 2 on the software charts, moving another 67,795 units for the week. The title has sold more than 532,000 units to date in the region.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the latest entry in the top-selling stealth action franchise. The new title is said to be Snake’s final mission in an attempt to foil Liquid Snake and his army.

Sony this week said that it will offer a ‘Life with Playstation’ service with news and weather information at a to-be-determined date.

Additionally, it will launch a movie download service for the PS3 in the U.S. this summer.

The PS3 ranked as the No. 3 best-selling console in May U.S. sales according to NPD Group Inc.
