Nintendo Co.’s Wii last month matched Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 in total U.S. hardware sales based on data from NPD Group this week.
Nintendo on Thurs. said that Wii U.S. sales have reached 10.2 million to date.
Microsoft in Apr. said that Xbox 360 sales reached the 10M mark faster than either the Wii or Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3.
However, Wii’s sales are likely to far exceed the 360 based on its current sales pace of 600,000 units sold per month in the U.S.
In May, the motion-sensitive hardware sold 675,089 units to rank as the No. 1 video game hardware in the month.
By comparison, the 360 sold 186,600 units in the same period.
Wii held strong sales in May on strong demand for Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit.
The release of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV failed to increase Xbox 360 hardware movement in month-to-month sales.
