Week recap: PS3 Qore; Xbox 360 dispute; Wii Fit stock

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 were stable in the latest Japan retail figures. The PS3 ranked No. 4 in overall sales.

Sony this week released Qore, a new weekly game series to the Playstation Network. The program is said to offer exclusive news and behind-the-scenes looks at upcoming titles.

Sony this week dropped Qore, add-ons, and game demos to the Playstation Store. Additionally new downloadable games were made available.

Konami Inc. this week said that it will host launch events for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Events will take place in L.A., San Francisco, and New York.

Sony this week said it will offer a dynamic in-game advertising solution for PS3 game titles. IGA Worldwide is the first partner to participate.

PS3 game sales saw a boost this week at Amazon.com following a price cut on select titles. Discounted titles included Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Dark Sector.

Amazon this week began selling the PS3 80GB MGS4 bundle to customers. The bundle includes the latest Metal Gear title and a Dualshock 3 controller.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 increased 25 percent in Japan in the latest retail tally. The hardware ranked No. 6 in overall sales.

Ninja Gaiden II developer Tomonobu Itagaki this week quit and sued Tecmo Inc. in a money dispute. He is claiming damages of 148 million yen.

Amazon.com discounted Mass Effect for the Xbox 360 to $34.99 in the latest round of video game price cuts. It carries an MSRP of $59.99.

Ninja Gaiden II held in the top 15 game sales this week at Amazon. The title is the latest entry in the action franchise.

Nintendo Co.’s Wii this week was outsold by Sony’s PSP in the latest Japan charts. Wii ranked as the No. 2 hardware for the week.

Buyers this week snapped up more Wii Fit at Amazon following a restock at the retailer. Wii Fit was released in mid-May.

An analyst this week said that most stock of Wii Fit was in Europe due to the weak U.S. dollar. Wii Fit has held a sold out status at most U.S. retailers.

Nintendo this week released a new wave of WiiWare and Virtual Console titles to Wii. New offerings include Toki Tori and Ninja Combat.

Technology News

Amazon this week began offering a $298 Blu-ray disc player to spur high-definition sales. The product carries an MSRP of $399.99.

The Flip Video Mino ranked at No. 1 upon debut at Amazon this week. The new pocket camcorder is slimmer than the previous model.

Softbank this week said that it will offer Apple Inc.’s iPhone to Japan consumers later this year. The company did not disclose pricing information.

A study this week claims that most HDTV owners don’t plan to buy a Blu-ray disc player. However, Blu-ray awareness rose from one year prior.

AMD Inc. this week launched a new notebook chip set previously called Puma. The platform is said to provide HD performance and energy efficiency on-the-go.

Starbucks Inc. this week said that it will offer free Wi-Fi to cardholder members. The new program starts in July.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. this week began offering a $298 Blu-ray disc player online. The product is also available at brick and mortar locations.

Best Buy this week said it will test a new recycling program to accept items like TVs, monitors, computers and phones at retail stores.

Amazon this week began pre-orders for Transformers on Blu-ray disc. The title was previously released on HD DVD format.
