Final: NBA Ballers: Chosen One no-frills on PS3, Xbox 360

June 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Midway Inc.’s NBA Ballers: Chosen One is a no-frills one-on-one basketball title for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 and Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3. The arcade gameplay relay a basic basketball experience for fans looking for quick non-strategic b-ball.

Chosen One features several play modes, including Story Mode, Create A Baller, Game Modes, online play, and Inside Stuff to view an in-game broadcast show.

For fans there are 67 NBA star and 14 legends players to chose from.

Create A Baller allows players to create a custom character, with options like face, lip size, nose width, and an array of skill traits.

Game Modes include 1-v-1, 2-v-2, 1-v-1-v-1 shoot out, Practice, and Three Point Challenge.

Players can perform a standard list of offensive and defensive moves like pump fakes, spins, steals, all with turbo variations. However, players may glitches that can make gameplay irregular, like hands passing through other players during a steal and limbs that pass right through the backboard.

Additionally, players can link offensive moves into a shot for fantastic combo variations, like tossing a ball into the opponent’s face before a dunk.

Online play is available on the PS3 or Xbox Live. Players can create games or join current games in the lobby. Extra options include number of rounds and time for each round.

The graphics engine is decent at 60 frames per second. Besides some poor collision detection, other graphic glitches include headless non-playable characters cheering the background. The character builds are solid and colors pop off the screen in HD.

The soundtrack features decent cuts from producer Chuck Blaze. The sound effects are standard fare.

NBA Ballers: Chosen One is a decent arcade basketball game that includes a few gameplay bricks that can irk fans. The title includes enough options, like custom players and online play, to keep die-hard players dunking.
