Sony Corp.’s Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 is a solid entry in the hit golf franchise. The sequel’s impressive physics, quirky customizations, and brand new online multiplayer options round out a fantastic on-the-go golf game.
Open Tee 2 features several modes, including Single Player Mode for Challenge, Stroke Play, Mini-Game, and Training; Multiplayer Mode for Online or Ad Hoc Tournament and Match Play sessions; and Wardrobe to customize characters in more than 350 customization options.
Players can choose from Normal or Easy Shot. In Normal, players must select the range and power of each shot, while Easy automates the shot in one action. Sadly, the game does not include the Advanced Shot mode found in Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds to provide a heftier shot challenge.
Physics are top-notch in Open Tee 2. Like previous entries, the golf ball is affected by the player’s swing and minute variations in each course, from physical properties to wind factor.
The game also cracks down on the allowance for a decent shot. When players stop the guide right outside the allowed pink zone, shots vary more wildly than prior versions.
The new online multiplayer mode can connect golfers into a max game of 16-players within a minute for nationwide or worldwide Tournament games. Up to eight can play via LAN connections.
The game makes it easy to select from key phrases like “Congratulations!” to “I’m happy with average” depending on each hole outcome.
During play, golfers can also see the competition’s placement in the game via multi-colored balls and icons.
However, after games, players must wait in a post-game lobby even if all players are finished with their shots.
A mini-game, or the ability to view player progress on the field would make the post-game wait more bearable.
The graphics engine is solid at 30 frames per second. Character and course detail are sharp, lush, and fine for a portable golf session.
Environmental sounds like birds, water, and wind complete the Zen-like experience through each round.
Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 is another winner in the Hot Shots franchise. The rock-solid physics and lag-free online multiplayer options are a hole-in-one for golf fans. Just have a magazine handy for the post-game online waiting room.
