Best Buy to discount Blu-ray notebook

Best Buy Co. Inc. stores will discount a notebook from Sony Corp. that includes a Blu-ray disc drive in the latest high-def deal.

Beginning June 1, the retailer will advertise a Sony notebook that includes an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo CPU, 3GB RAM, and a Blu-ray disc drive with HDMI connector for $1599, a $100 instant savings off the regular price.

The Blu-ray format declared victory over Toshiba Corp.’s HD DVD format in Feb.

NPD Group Inc. in May said that Blu-ray disc player sales fell 40 percent in Feb. from Jan. Sales rebounded three percent in Mar.

Retailers have begun offering retail incentives for Blu-ray disc titles to drive U.S. sales.

Amazon this week began offering up to 50 percent off high-definition titles in a new Summer Blu-ray Blowout sale.

Meanwhile, Best Buy this week discounted titles to as low as $16.99.

Finally, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. this week released a $298 $298 Magnavox Blu-ray disc player to brick and mortar locations.
