Intel, Micron deliver 34-nm 32GB flash chip

May 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Intel Corp.and Micron Technology, Inc this week announced the first first sub-40 nanometer NAND memory device for increased storage in small devices.

Intel and Micron will offer customer samples of the 32-nm 34GB, multi-level cell chip in June. Mass production is expected during the second half of 2008.

Intel says that a 32GB chip could store more than 2,000 high-resolution digital photos or hold up to 1,000 songs on a music player.

Additionally, two 8-die stacked packages could yield 64GB of storage for a digital camcorder.

“This new 32 Gb device provides the best bit storage density available in the industry,” said Brian Shirley, vice president of Micron’s Memory Group.

“Together with our partners at Intel, we’re proud to have now taken the lead in production process technology.” Solid-state drives have become more cost-effective in recent years to provide faster boot-up time and increased reliability in laptops and music devices.

Apple Inc. this year began offering a 64GB solid-state drive option for the MacBook Air notebook.
