Week recap: PS3 MGS4; Xbox 360 warm; Wii Fit sold out

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 fell below 8,000 units in the latest Japan retail charts. The hardware ranked No. 4 in overall sales.

Konami Inc. this week debriefed new details for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The title will include custom weapons and the Metal Gear Mk. II reconnaissance tool.

Amazon this week began offering a new discount bundle for the PS3 and Blu-ray related products. The offer is the latest high-definition promo from the retailer.

Sony this week released Singstar for the PS3. The new entry is sold in a bundle SKU with two USB microphones and as a stand alone title.

Konami Inc. this week began taking orders for the limited edition Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle. The SKU will include a Gun Metal Grey PS3 and limited edition MGS4 game for $599.

Sony this month said the more PS3 owners purchased Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV than Xbox 360 owners. The company said sales for the title held a higher attach rate on the latest Playstation hardware.

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 warmed up in the latest Japan retail tally. The hardware No. 6 in overall sales.

Activision Inc. this week said it will release Guitar Hero: World Tour to the Xbox 360. The title will feature drum and microphone peripherals and downloadable content.

Greenpeace this week said that video game consoles, including the Xbox 360, held potentially harmful chemicals. Microsoft said they plan to eliminate particular chemicals in future products.

Konami Inc. this released new details for Silent Hill: The Homecoming. The title will be the first to be released to the Xbox 360 and PS3 and will feature a brand new combat engine.

Nintendo Co. this week launched Wii Fit to U.S. retailers. The SKU includes the Wii Balance Board for $89.99.

Sales for Wii fell 39 percent in the latest Japan retail figures. The hardware ranked No. 2 in overall sales.

Wii Fit is sold out at online retailers following release this week. Retailers including Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and Toysrus.com are sold out of the product.

Wii Fit is holding fat profits for resellers due to scarce availability at retail. Most brick and mortar and online retailers are sold out of the item.

Retailers this week held back the release of Wii Fit due to a last minute release date change. The title was made available on May 21 to nationwide U.S. retailers.

Retailers began to flex Wii Fit marketing this week in Sun. circulars. Walmart.com offered a free $10 gift card for online orders and Circuit City offered $5 off all Wii Fit accessories this week.

Nintendo this week a new wave of WiiWare and Virtual Console titles to Wii. Titles include Critter Round-Up and Star Soldier R.

Technology News

Microsoft this week announced a new search engine called Live Search cashback. The search engine allows consumers to receive cash back on items purchased through the website.

Netflix Inc. this week began offering the Netflix Player to consumers. The $99 hardware allows subscribers to stream movies and TV content to their living room.

Amazon this week began offering a National Treasure / Narnia Blu-ray promo. Consumers who purchase both titles will receive a discount off the order.
