Top Gun Blu-ray sales soar at Amazon

Advanced sales for Paramount Pictures Corp.’s Top Gun Blu-ray disc soared this week upon availability at Amazon.com.

Sales for the title increased 49,124 percent on Thurs. On Sat. morning the title ranked as the No. 59 best-selling Blu-ray disc at the retailer.

Top Gun will be released to Blu-ray on July 29. It carries a sale price of $20.95.

The title was previously released in HD DVD format in Oct. 2007.

Additionally, sales for the Iron Man Blu-ray disc rocketed to the top 10 this week.

The Blu-ray format declared victory over Toshiba Corp.’s HD DVD format in Feb. However, the format win has not relayed steady sales for disc players at retail.

NPD Group Inc. in May said that Blu-ray disc player sales fell 40 percent in Feb. from Jan. Sales rebounded three percent in Mar.

In addition to Amazon, retailers including Best Buy Co. Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Target Corp., Circuit City Stores Inc. and Netflix Inc. are backing the Blu-ray format.

Amazon.com this week began offering a new discounted bundle for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Blu-ray related products.

In the new offer, customers who purchase a 40GB PS3 SKU, PS3 Blu-ray remote, and The Fifth Element Blu-ray disc will receive the remote and movie disc for free.
