Nintendo Co.’s Wii outsold Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 and Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 combined in the latest hardware sales data by NPD Group Inc.
In Apr., Wii sold 714,000 units compared to the Xbox 360 at 188,000 and the PS3 at 187,000 units in the same period.
The release of Take-Two Interactive Inc.’s Grand Theft Auto IV failed to boost month-end sales in the short period of release. It debuted on Apr. 27.
Meanwhile, Wii rode high on sales of Mario Kart Wii, the latest chapter in the racing series. The title sold 1.1 million copies to rank as the No. 2 software for the month of Apr.
Mario Kart Wii includes the Wii Wheel peripheral for wireless racing action. The latest entry also includes online racing functionality.
Next week, Nintendo will sell the new $89.99 title Wii Fit, which will allow users to perform more than 40 exercises on the included Wii Balance Board peripheral.
Overall video game sale rose 47 percent from one year earlier.
