PS3 sales slow in Japan

Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 continues to sell warmly in the region in the latest Japan retail tally.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 8,054 units between May 5 and May 11. By comparison, the PSP handheld sold 89,884 units and Nintendo Co.’s Wii sold 67,308 units in the same week.

The PS3 ranked two titles in the top 50 software sales, including Sega Corp.’s Valkyria Chronicles at No. 15.

In the U.S., the PS3 sold 187,071 units for the month of Apr. in the latest NPD Group Inc. data.

Additionally, Sony this week said Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV had a 29 percent higher attach rate on the PS3 than Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360.

Sony this week recorded a fourth quarter fiscal profit on lower losses in the game division.
