Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 hardware is the first next-generation platform to reach 10 million units sold, the software company said Wed.
The Xbox 360 was released in 2005, one year prior to the release of Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and Nintendo Co.’s Wii home video game system.
By comparison, Wii has sold 8.8 million units nationwide, while the PS3 has sold 4.1 million units in the U.S.
Additionally, the Xbox Live online service has now reached 12 million members worldwide.
The Xbox 360 has held strong demand on top action titles like Halo 3 and Gears of War. It, however, holds a last place rank among consoles sold in Japan, where it has failed to attract consumers in the region.
Microsoft this month said that week-to-week Xbox 360 sales increased 54 percent on the release of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV.
The latest in the action series will offer two exclusive downloadable episodes to the Xbox 360 this fall.
