Sony Corp. on Tues. recorded a profit due to strong sales in its game unit, which includes the Playstation 3 hardware.
Sony posted a profit of $278 million in the quarter compared to a loss of 67.6 billion yen one year prior.
The game division posted a loss of 11.6 billion yen, a sharp increase from a 107.8 million yen loss one year ago.
Reduced costs and Blu-ray adoption have lended to stronger sales in the U.S. market during the holiday and spring period.
Sony expects to sell 10 million PS3 units this fiscal year ending Mar. 2009. The target is an increase of 9.24 million units sold in the previous year.
NPD Group Inc. in Apr. reported that the PS3 sold 257,120 units in Mar. U.S. sales to rank as the No. 5 video game hardware for the month.
Key current titles for the PS3 include Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Konami Corp.’s June release Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in June.
