Nintendo Co. on Mon. announced the availability of WiiWare, a new online game service for the Wii home video game system.
The game service offers new, original titles for Wii and allows developers to create inexpensive offerings for the hardware.
New titles available at launch include Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, LostWinds, Defend your Castle, Pop, V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack, and TV Show King.
“WiiWare is to the video game industry what independent films are to Hollywood,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.
“WiiWare lets developers experiment with new ideas and experiences. Combined with our collection of classic Virtual Console games, Wii provides one-stop shopping for the greatest games of the past – and the future.”
Wii currently offers a Virtual Console division that offers classic titles from previous game consoles.
NPD Group Inc. last month reported that the Wii sold 720,000 units in the month of Mar. to rank as the No. 1 video game hardware in the U.S. for the month.
