PS3 Sixaxis price cut amid Dualshock 3 release

April 15th, 2008 · No Comments

Amazon.com on Mon. discounted Sony Corp.’s Sixaxis wireless controller for the Playstation 3 following release of the new Dualshock 3 controller to U.S. retail.

The retailer is selling the Sixaxis controller for $39.99, $10 off the MSRP.

Sony in Apr. released the Dualshock 3 controller to U.S. retail one-week early, which quickly ranked in the top 10 best-sellers at Amazon upon debut.

The DualShock 3 controller will include rumble functionality not found in the current Sixaxis controller.

The company released the controller in Nov. 2007 in Japan.

Sony in Nov. 2006 released the Sixaxis controller with no rumble functionality due to ongoing litigation with Immersion Corp., a tactile feedback company.

In Mar. 2007, the companies announced an agreement to end litigation and incorporate Immersion technology in Sony products.

Titles compatible with the new controller in the U.S. and Europe include Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots, Unreal Tournament 3, Condemned 2, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.

Sony in June will retail a new 80GB PS3 SKU that includes Konami Corp.’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for $499.99.
