Best Buy to discount new Sony Blu-ray notebook

Best Buy Co. Inc. stores on Sun. will offer a new discount on a notebook from Sony Corp. that includes a Blu-ray disc drive to view high-definition titles.

Beginning Apr. 13, Best Buy will sell a new Sony 17″ Intel Centrino Notebook that includes a Blu-ray disc drive for $1549.99 after instant savings.

The notebook includes an HDMI connector, 3GB DDR2 memory, 320GB hard drive, and nVidia GeForce graphics card.

The product is the latest to promote Blu-ray disc technology, which held a victory over the HD DVD format in Feb. when Toshiba Corp. exited the high-definition format business.

Best Buy is also offering $100 off the purchase a Playstation 3 and an HDTV $999 and up.

Each PS3 sold includes a Blu-ray disc drive.

Sony this week said that it will release new DTS-HD high-definition audio to the PS3 in an Apr. firmware update. DTS-HD Master Audio can deliver audio at a high variable rate of 24.5 mega-bits per second. It also offers 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24 bit depths.

Additionally, this week it projected a 50 percent market share for Blu-ray in total DVD sales by the end of 2008.

Retailers have begun to offer promotions to spur Blu-ray growth and clear HD DVD inventory.

Amazon this week fired a new Buy 2 Get 1 Free Blu-ray disc sale.

In Mar., it began offering a new 60 percent off HD DVD sale in the latest promotion for the defunct high-definition format.

Last week, Circuit City stores slashed HD DVD prices by 50 percent to clear inventory.
