Sony Corp.’s 80GB Playstation 3 SKU leaped to the No. 1 rank at Amazon.com on Tues. evening following a restock of the in-demand configuration.
On Tues., sales for the 80GB PS3 SKU increased 23,200 percent to rank as the No. 1 product in the Video Games division.
The 80GB model has been hard to find at U.S. retail as Sony preps to release a brand new SKU that includes Konami Corp.’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in June.
Retailers including Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Circuit City do not offer the product for purchase online.
The PS3 has held strong momentum on the U.S. charts following Sony’s Blu-ray format victory over Toshiba Corp.’s HD DVD in Feb.
Each PS3 sold includes a Blu-ray disc drive to view high-definition titles.
Sony this month released the new Dualshock 3 controller one week early to U.S. retail. The peripheral has held in the top 10 products upon release at Amazon.
Sony this week told news reporters that it expects the Blu-ray format to capture 50 percent of DVD market share by the end of the year. It currently holds 20 percent of the market.
This week, Amazon fired a new ‘Buy 2 Get 1 Free‘ Blu-ray disc sale.
More than 50 titles are eligible for the offer, including Pan’s Labyrinth, 300, Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down, The Departed, and Ocean’s Thirteen.
