Best Buy Co. Inc. stores on Sun. will begin to offer a savings bundle for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and a new HDTV in the latest high-definition promotion.
In the newest Sunday circular, the retailer promotes a high-definition package which includes a Sony Bravia 40″ XBR 1080p LCD HDTV, 40GB PS3 SKU, and Geek Squad movie theater setup for $2499.99.
The package includes a $400 instant savings on the HDTV, $100 savings on the purchase of a PS3 and any HDTV $999 and up, and $100 savings on premium setup fees.
Each PS3 sold includes a Blu-ray disc drive to watch new high-definition titles.
Toshiba in Feb. said it would exit the HD DVD business by Mar. following announcements from Best Buy, Netflix Inc., and Wal-Mart that they would back Sony Corp.’s Blu-ray over HD DVD.
Best Buy stores this month began to devote former HD DVD shelf space to Blu-ray disc titles as the obsolete format is cleared from retail.
In Mar. Best Buy said it will send out $10 million in gift cards to customers who purchased HD DVD players from the company to compensate for investing in the obsolete format.
Retailers have begun to offer promotions to spur Blu-ray growth and clear HD DVD inventory.
Amazon is offering up to 47 percent off Blu-ray disc titles.
This week, it also fired a new 60 percent off HD DVD sale in the latest promotion for the defunct high-definition format.
Finally, Circuit City stores this week slashed HD DVD prices by 50 percent to clear inventory.
