Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox Live online network will receive original content programming that will debut exclusively on the platform, The New York Times reported on Mon.
Microsoft is said to have entered in an agreement with Safran Company, headed by veteran Hollywood producer and talent manager Peter Safran to produce original shows to be distributed via Xbox Live this summer.
Safran told The New York Times that initial programming will be scripted and likely run under 10 minutes.
Xbox Live currently offers high-definition content to an available 10 million Xbox Live members.
The division currently offers more than 3,200 hours of content from more than 30 studios and networks.
In Mar. 2007 Microsoft said that Xbox Live had become the No. 1 online distributor of television and feature film content in the living room.
Content partners include MTV, Warner Bros., Nickelodeon, and ESPN.
Microsoft last month said that will end the production of the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player following an announcement from Toshiba Corp. the same month that it will exit the HD DVD business.
Microsoft in Feb. warned that the Xbox 360 was in short supply at U.S. retail and could hinder market share for the next two months. The company said it hoped to correct the shortage problem sometime in Mar.
