Circuit City marks 50% off HD DVD inventory

Circuit City stores on Sun. began offering 50 percent off all HD DVD inventory in a bid to clear stock of the obsolete format.

In the latest Sun. circular, Circuit City advertised half off all HD DVD titles. Additionally, it advertised an entry-level HD DVD Player for $99.99.

Toshiba in Feb. said it will exit the HD DVD business by Mar. following announcements from Best Buy Co. Inc., Netflix Inc., and Wal-Mart stores that they would back Blu-ray over HD DVD.

A decisive blow to the HD DVD camp came in Jan. when Warner Bros. announced that it would produce high-definition titles exclusively on Blu-ray disc.

Best Buy Co. Inc. this month said it will send out $10 million in gift cards to customers who purchased HD DVD players from the company to compensate for investing in the obsolete format.

Circuit City stores this month began offering a program to allow HD DVD buyers to trade-in towards a Blu-ray player or a gift card in the amount of the product.

Retailers have begun to offer new purchase incentives to move HD DVD product.

Best Buy this month began offering 30 percent off all HD DVD inventory to in-store customers.

This month, Amazon.com fired a new 57% off HD DVD sale to promote HD DVD sales.

Discounted titles include The Complete Matrix Trilogy at $41.99, The Ocean’s Trilogy at $36.49, Harry Potter Years 1- 5 Limited Edition Gift Set at $71.49, and Batman Begins at $15.99.
