Rockstar Games and Amazon.com this week said that the two will partner to allow buyers of the video game title Grand Theft Auto IV to purchase music tracks heard in the game from Amazon.
In the new music distribution model, players can mark any in-game radio track by dialing ZIT-555-0100. Players will receive a text message with the song and artist names, and registered to the Rockstar Games Social Club will receive an e-mail to purchase the tracks from Amazon.
Amazon sells MP3 music tracks from $.89 to $.99. The tracks sold from the Grand Theft Auto IV soundtrack will be free of Digital Rights Management (DRM) limitations to allow the transfer of items to any digital device.
Tracks to be featured in the game include Electrick Funk’s 12-inch treasure “On A Journey”, Elton John’s “Street Kids”, and exclusive trackcs like “War is Necessary” from rapper Nas.
EA this month said that the music title Rock Band has sold more than six million song tracks to owners to relay a new post-launch revenue stream for game publishers.
Grand Theft Auto IV is the next chapter in the best-selling Grand Theft Auto franchise. The Xbox 360 version will include two downloadable episodes available exclusively on Xbox Live.
The title focuses on Niko Bellic, an Eastern European immigrant who travels to Liberty City.
Take-Two Interactive in Aug. delayed Grand Theft Auto IV to 2008 from an original Oct. 2007 release. The publisher cited additional development time required to complete the title.
The title will be released on Apr. 29 for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 and Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3.
This week, Take-Two rejected a $2B buyout offer from EA, saying that the bid undervalued the software maker.
