Retailer offers free Blu-ray disc with PS3

March 2nd, 2008 by Marcus Lai · No Comments

Retailer Fry’s Electronics this week began offering a free Blu-ray disc title with the purchase of Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 in the latest high-definition promotion.

Beginning this week, customers who purchase a 40GB PS3 in-store will receive The Legend of Zorro on Blu-ray disc at no additional cost.

The PS3 has held strong sales in the U.S. following the Blu-ray disc format’s victory over Toshiba Corp.’s HD DVD.

Sales for the 80GB PS3 SKU spiked last week at Amazon.com after the item was restocked for customers.

Retailers have begun to offer more incentives to drive Blu-ray sales.

Amazon is offering up to 50 percent off select Blu-ray disc titles.

Best Buy last week touted Blu-ray and the Playstation 3 on its weekly circular front page. The retailer offered an HDTV, PS3, game, and Blu-ray disc package for under $2,000.

Sony last week said that it will offer a new 80GB PS3 SKU that will include Konami Corp.’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for $499.99. The new offering is slated to be released in late Q2.
