Best Buy to offer free Blu-ray discs with player

March 1st, 2008 · No Comments

Best Buy Co. Inc. on Sun will offer free Blu-ray disc titles with the purchase of a Blu-ray disc player in the latest high-definition promotion.

Beginning Mar. 2, customers who purchase the Panasonic 1080p Blu-ray disc player ($499.99 before instant savings) will receive any two Blu-ray disc titles instantly at no additional cost.

Blu-ray disc player manufacturers and retailers are expected to keep prices stable now that the format is the default high-definition disc option for consumers.

On Fri. sales for the $499 80GB Playstation 3 SKU spiked at Amazon.com upon restock.

Additionally, Sony this week said that it will offer a new 80GB PS3 SKU that will include Konami Corp.’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for $499.99. The new offering is slated to be released in late Q2.

In contrast, player and disc prices were cut faster than expected when Toshiba Corp. drastically discounted HD DVD players and titles.

Amazon is offering HD DVD titles as low as $11.95 to clear inventory of the high-definition format.

Retailers have begun to offer more incentives to drive Blu-ray sales.

Amazon is offering up to 50 percent off select Blu-ray disc titles.

Best Buy last week touted Blu-ray and the Playstation 3 on its weekly circular front page. The retailer offered an HDTV, PS3, game, and Blu-ray disc package for under $2,000.
