March 1st, 2008 · No Comments

Strong advanced orders for Dreamworks Pictures Bee Movie on HD DVD were killed this week when Paramount Home Video studio announced that it will drop the high-definition format by Mar. 4.

Dreamworks distributes home video releases through Paramount.

Advanced orders for Bee Movie rose 158 percent on Amazon.com on Fri. to rank at No. 345 in the DVD division.

Retailers this month discounted HD DVD players to as low as $99.99 to entice buyers to snatch remaining inventory.

Additionally, Amazon is offering HD DVD titles as low as $11.95 to clear inventory of the format.

Last week it began promoting a new 57 percent off HD DVD sale to include box sets.

This week, Amazon price cut Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to $49.99 from $129.99. Microsoft on Sat. said it would end production on the item, which was introduced in late 2006.

Toshiba last week said it will exit the HD DVD business by Mar. following announcements from Best Buy Co. Inc., Netflix Inc., and Wal-Mart stores that they would back Blu-ray over HD DVD.
