Sony cuts PS3 shipment forecast; records profit

Sony Corp. on Thurs. cut the shipment forecast for the Playstation 3 video game console despite posting a profit in the game division for the Oct. – Dec. quarter.

Sony cut the fiscal Mar. shipment forecast to 9.5 million units, down from 11 million units.

The company reported a profit increase of 25.2 percent to 200.2 billion yen ($1.9 billion) in the period.

Additionally, Sony’s game division held a profit on sales of the PSP handheld and Playstation 2, and cut production costs for the PS3.

Sony increased the its PSP shipment target 30 percent to 13 million units.

The company this month said that it sold 1.2 million PS3 units U.S. retailers during the holiday sales period.

NPD Group Inc. this month recorded sales of 797,600 PS3 units sold to U.S. consumers in Dec., below sales of Nintendo Co.’s Wii at 1.35 million units and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 at 1.26 million units in the same period.

Nintendo this month raised its Wii shipment target to 18.5 million, an increase from a target of 17.5 million. In addition, it raised the sales forecast for the Nintendo DS to 29.5 million units by fiscal Mar.

Microsoft this month posted a 79 percent increase in second-quarter profits on strong sales of the Xbox 360. It has shipped 17.7 million Xbox 360 units worldwide to date.
