Resellers hawk PS3 DualShock 3 at Amazon

Resellers have begun offering Sony Corp.’s DualShock 3 controller for the Playstation 3 at Amazon.com.

The controller includes rumble functionality not found in the current Sixaxis controller.

The DualShock 3 was made available in Japan in Nov. The peripheral will be introduced in the U.S. and Europe sometime in the spring.

Sony in Nov. 2006 released the Sixaxis controller with no rumble functionality due to ongoing litigation with Immersion Corp., a tactile feedback company. In Mar., the companies announced an agreement to end litigation and incorporate Immersion technology in Sony products.

Titles to be compatible with the new controller in the U.S. and Europe include Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots, Condemned 2, and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Sony in Jan. said that it sold 1.2 million PS3 units to U.S. retailers during the holiday sales period.

NPD Group Inc. this month recorded sales of 797,600 units to U.S. consumers in Dec., below sales of Nintendo Co.’s Wii at 1.35 million units and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 at 1.26 million units in the same period.
