A financial analyst told Bloomberg.com this week that sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 may fall short of a target of 11 million units by fiscal Mar. 2008.
“It’s an industry consensus that PS3 sales will fall short of the target,” said Mitsuhiro Osawa, a Tokyo-based analyst at Mizuho Investors Securities Co.
Sony in Dec. said it was on track to ship 11 million PS3 units to worldwide territories.
In Jan., Sony said it moved 1.2 million PS3 units to U.S. retailers in the Dec. holiday period.
However, NPD Group Inc. this month recorded sales of 797,600 units to U.S. consumers in Dec., far below sales of Nintendo Co.’s Wii at 1.35 million units and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 at 1.26 million units in the same period.
Sony price cut the PS3 in July and Oct. in the U.S to spur sales. It introduced a lower-priced 40GB model in Nov.
In Oct. it price cut the PS3 in Japan by 10 percent. This month the company said it will discontinue the 20GB and 60GB model in Japan to concentrate on the 40GB SKU.
