CES 2008: PS3 title LittleBigPlanet social, creative fun

Sony Corp. this week demonstrated the game title LittleBigPlanet for the Playstation 3 this week at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV.

In a show floor play test, the title exhibited a range of social interaction and creative puzzle solving elements.

Players can customize their character in-game with the square button. Various face paints and new bodies can be interchanged to create a custom character at any time.

The X button allows players to jump on objects. At certain points, players can hold up and jump to move from the foreground to the background and access a whole new plane of objects.

The L1 button allows players to hold onto objects. In a hold, characters can push or pull objects into position to reach higher ground. For example, players can roll a round object, continue the hold, and wait for the character to reach the top of it before leaping to an elevated platform.

The trade show demo level included jet packs hanging from a tree. Upon touching the pack, it automatically sprouted players to a previously unreachable section to continue on.

The most fun occurred in two-player mode, which fosters social interaction between users in order to reach the next area. In one location, I held a round object in place and the second player used it to leap forward.

Not all is perfect with the in-progress title, however. For example, it was difficult to know which areas allowed players to move in and out of the two planes. In addition, sometimes the jump function allowed for double leaps on objects and other times it didn’t pull through.

The simple premise of interacting with realistic objects and traveling with companions is already making LittleBigPlanet a landmark title for the PS3. The ability to create brand new levels from scratch and share them with others is likely to create a cult following at launch.

A representative told attendees that user-created levels could be categorized by ‘Most Popular’ to showcase the most interesting fare in daily updates.

A release date for LittleBigPlanet is to be determined.
