Xbox 360 sales poor at Japan holiday retail

Sales for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 fared poorly against rival offerings during the holiday buying season in the latest Japan retail data.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the Xbox 360 sold 7,908 units between Dec. 17 and Dec. 23, a decrease from sales of 8,561 the week prior.

By comparison, Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 sold more than 58,000 units and Nintendo Co.’s Wii sold more than 230,000 units in the same week.

In addition, the Xbox 360 was unable to rank any software titles in the top 50 game sales in the period.

The Xbox 360 has held lackluster sales in Japan on hit and miss software offerings for the region.

In the first half of 2007, Microsoft sold 122,565 Xbox 360 units in Japan, compared to 503,554 PS3 units and 1.78 million units of Wii, according to magazine publisher Enterbrain.

Microsoft in Oct. posted a Q1 profit in the Entertainment and Devices division, which includes the Xbox business. Sales held on higher-than-expected Xbox 360 movement and demand for the action title Halo 3.

The Xbox 360 was the No. 3 video game hardware in Nov. U.S. sales. It has shipped 13.4 million units worldwide to date.
