Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 were 1/4 the sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii in the latest Japan retail sales data.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 58,167 units between Dec. 17 and Dec. 23, a decrease from sales of 63,720 the week prior.
By comparison, the Wii sold 232,907 units in the same period.
PS3 software ranked in three positions in the top 50 game sales. The latest Playstation hardware did not rank any game titles in the top 10.
Overall, the PS3 ranked as the No. 4 best-selling video game hardware for the week, below popular handhelds and the Wii.
Last week, the racing simulation title Gran Turismo 5 Prologue placed in the top 10 software rankings.
Game magazine publisher Enterbrain in Nov. said that the PS3 outpaced Wii sales in total units for the month.
Sony in Oct. price cut the PS3 by 10 percent in Japan to spur sales. The company in Oct. recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronics sales.
