Wal-Mart to offer PS3 40GB with free $50 gift card

Wal-Mart stores this week will offer Sony Corp.’s 40GB Playstation 3 SKU with a free $50 gift card according to an internal employee memo.

The offer will be part of a storewide Secret In-Store Special promotion from Dec. 7 to Dec. 8.

In the promotion period, buyers who purchase the 40GB PS3 SKU will receive a free $50 gift card instantly.

The $399 40GB PS3 SKU, introduced on Nov. 2, includes a Blu-ray disc drive, built-in Wi-Fi, a wireless controller, and copy of Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray disc.

The promotion is the latest retail promotion to offer additional items at no cost for video game hardware purchases.

Walmart.com in Nov. offered a free game and Blu-ray remote with the purchase of a 40GB or 80GB PS3 SKU.

On Black Friday, Best Buy offered a free game title and Blu-ray disc movie with the purchase of a 40GB PS3.

Sony last week said PS3 sales increased 245 percent during Thanksgiving week.

Sony in Oct. recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronics sales.
