Top trends in keyword search included new video game consoles in the Yahoo! Top Trends in Search in 2007 list released on Mon.
Among the top ten keywords in tech were Nintendo Co.’s Wii at No. 6, Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 at No. 7, and Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 and No. 9.
“With its simplicity and relatively reasonable price, the Wii left its rivals in the Search dust,” an editorial article explains at Yahoo’s Top Trends page.
“Its simple controls helped introduce mothers and grandparents to the joy of gamesmanship. Virtual reality no longer belonged solely to male teens, as the Wii ushered in the era of family-friendly social gaming.”
Retailers on Sun. restocked Wii to U.S. customers to the delight of patient customers who stood in line the early morning hours.
Nintendo last week held record sales of Wii, moving 350,000 units during the Thanksgiving week shopping period.
Wii has sold five million units in the U.S. in one year of availability. The motion-sensitive console has become a mass market hit with lower barrier-to-entry game titles.
Nintendo in Oct. raised profit forecast estimates on strong demand for the Wii and Nintendo DS handheld. It expects to sell 17.5 million Wii units this business year.
