Sales for Nintendo Co.’s Wii struck back at Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 as the console nudged its way ahead of the latest Playstation in Japan retail sales.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that Wii sold 54,362 units between Nov. 19 and Nov. 25. By comparison the PS3 sold 50,564 units in the same period.
Wii’s lead over the PS3 comes after a two-week sales streak from the former that had Nintendo’s console in a rare No. 2 position in console hardware sales in the region.
Game magazine publisher Enterbrain in Oct. said that the Nintendo Co.’s Wii outsold PS3 2-to-1 in Japan in Oct. compared to a lead of 6-to-1 in June to slim the sales gap between both consoles.
Sony in Oct. price cut the PS3 by 10 percent in Japan to spur sales. The company last month recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronic sales.
Last week, Sony said that PS3 sales in the U.S. increased 245 percent in Thanksgiving week sales.
