PS3 outpaces Wii in Nov. Japan sales

Sales for Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 outpaced Nintendo Co.’s Wii in the latest tally of Japan retail sales for the month of Nov.

Game magazine publisher Enterbrain on Fri. said that the PS3 sold 183,217 units in Nov. compared to 159,193 Wii units sold in the same period.

The PS3 held a two-week sales streak ahead of Wii in the month of Nov. In the most recent weekly count, Wii struck back to lead by several thousand units.

Enterbrain in Oct. said that the Nintendo Co.’s Wii outsold PS3 2-to-1 in Japan in Oct. compared to a lead of 6-to-1 in June to slim the sales gap between both consoles.

Sony in Oct. price cut the PS3 by 10 percent in Japan to spur sales. The company in Oct. recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronics sales.

Last week, Sony said that PS3 sales in the U.S. increased 245 percent in Thanksgiving week sales.
